Using a common language to describe assessment is important for the development of the assessment tasks in our teaching, for exchanging ideas with colleagues within and outside mathematics, for designing the assessment strategy of a department, and for articulating to students what is important, what is needed to improve in the next task, and the characteristics of each level of performance. In the mathsassess guide some basic generic terms related to assessment are introduced which are then followed by a more detailed explanation of the language specific to mathematics assessment.
